How to take mifepristone and misoprostol
The timing of when you administer your medication is important. If your pregnancy is of 10 weeks gestation you will need to come into the clinic to take your medications.
- Step 1 – You will swallow the first medicine (mifepristone) with water
- Step 2 – 1 to 2 days later you will take the second medicine (misoprostol)
- And also, 3 to 4 hours after the first dose of misoprostol, you will take another dose
It is possible in Perú to have a therapeutic abortion when the pregnancy presents a risk to the woman’s life, or a serious and permanent risk to her health.
Medical abortion by pill with Misoprostol and manual aspiration.
Who can perform abortions in Peru?
Public hospitals and private clinics. There are also safe private doctors who provide clandestine abortions in Peru.
The categories of health institutions that can perform abortions are 1-4 For Post-abortion care and II-E for therapeutic.
Where can I go for an abortion service in Peru?
You can access services in public and private clinics in case of a therapeutic abortion diagnosis, an incomplete abortion, or an abortion in process, but many barriers exist.
Abortion in a hospital costs around 700 soles or more. In private clinics, prices respond to their target public. Abortion is safe, private (but clandestine) clinics cost between 1000 – 1500 soles.
Can I buy abortion pills at a pharmacy in Peru?
You can buy misoprostol without a prescription, but it can be costly to get a complete dose. The pharmacies that sell the pills without requiring a prescription are neighbourhood drug stores, but they very probably will inflate the price.
The use of mifepristone is not allowed in the country.
Can I buy abortion pills online in Peru?
There are online abortion vendors. Not only do these groups sell misoprostol, but they also sell mifepristone that enters the country illegally because mifepristone is not legally sold under the Ministry of Health. In addition to inflating the price, some of these online vendors also cheat: they may not deliver the product, they may sell expired medication, or they may provide instructions that don’t correspond to the World Health Organization.
What medications can be used safely for an abortion with pills?
Abortion with pills involves two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. They can be used together — or misoprostol can be used alone — to empty the uterus safely and effectively by starting a process similar to a miscarriage. This method is very common because mifepristone is not available in many places.
You’ll experience bleeding and some cramping. It’s very important you use pads and not tampons to avoid infection.
The cramps may become strong – this is a normal part of the abortion process. Bleeding may get heavier and you may pass clots. This is usually at the time you begin to lose your pregnancy. You may not see it specifically, and it may appear as a clot.
Side effects of the medication may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and shivering. It may continue to be quite heavy for a day or two as the uterus needs to contract and return to its normal size. But Most women pass the pregnancy within 4 or 5 hours after taking the pill. For others, it can be quicker or take longer.
