How long does it take for the process to be completed?

You will need at least 1 visit. Some women may require 2-3 visits. 95% of patients doing a medical abortion using Mifepristone will be completed in the first week. Bleeding usually starts within 30 minutes to 3-4 hours after using the Misoprostol and may be heavy for 4-8 hours. You may continue to have some bleeding or spotting for a few weeks. There is a 5% chance of a delayed reaction. This does not mean you need surgery but does make the process take longer as you may require more medication and time to pass the tissue.

Is abortion legal in New Zealand?

Abortion is illegal in New Zealand unless two certifying consultants approve.

Certifying consultants can approve an abortion up to 20 weeks gestation if:

  • There is serious danger to the life, physical, or mental health of the pregnant person
  • There is a substantial risk of serious mental or physical disability for the child if born
  • The pregnancy is the result of incest
  • The woman or girl is severely subnormal

After 20 weeks, abortion is only available to prevent serious, permanent harm to the mental or physical health of the pregnant person.

The laws around abortion in New Zealand have not changed materially since 1977. As a result, the law does not take early medical abortions into account. Patients must take both medical abortion drugs in an institution licensed to provide abortions. They can go home after taking each set of pills (Mifepristone / Misoprostol).

Abortion is safer than delivery

The risks of abortion (failure to complete the procedure, retained products after the procedure, bleeding, infection, damage to the womb, infertility, or possible death, for example) are the same as the risks of delivering a newborn.

The difference between abortion and delivery is that these risks occur far less often after abortions than they do after deliveries.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that, from 1998 to 2001, the most common complications associated with pregnancy ‒ including high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, and mental health conditions ‒ happened more often in women who had a live birth than those who got an abortion. The Turnaway Study confirmed these findings as well.
